Curriculum Vitae of Jakob Rhyner

Since 2018: University of Bonn. Professor for Global Change and Systemic Risks at the Agricultural Faculty, and Scientific Director of the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research/Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB).

2010-2018: United Nations University, Vice Rector in Europe and Director of the Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). Responsibilities: Policy-oriented research on environmental risks, including environmentally induced migration, climate risk insurance, as well as education and capacity building. Associate Professor at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn.

2001-2011: Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), Davos, Switzerland. Division Leader Avalanche Warning and Risk Management, since 2006 head of SLF. Responsibilities: Early warning systems for snow avalanches and hydrological hazards, measurement and observation networks, risk management frameworks, as well education and training of safety professionals.

1988-2001: Industrial research, ABB Ltd., Switzerland. Responsibilities: Physical and numerical modeling of electric power systems, particularly the application of high temperature superconductivity, and materials research.

1996 and 1997: consulting engineer at ABB AB Kabeldon in Alingsås, Sweden.

1990-1991: One-year stay at the Center for Theoretical Solid State Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (theory of electrical properties of nano materials).

1988: PhD in Theoretical Physics, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, partly completed at the L.D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics in Moscow.

• Since 2018: Scientific Board of Stiftung Entwicklung und Frieden (Foundation Security and Peace).
• 2017-2019: Member of the Science and Technology Advisory Group of the UN Secretariat for Disaster Risk Reduction
• 2016-2019: Co-Chair of the Governing Council of Future Earth
• 2011-2016: Board of the German Committee for Disaster Prevention
• 2002-2008: Coordinator of the Group of European Avalanche Warning Services
• Member of several boards for the Swiss National Science Foundation and other funding organizations
