Our Mission

The Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research was founded in November 2017 at COP23 with the aim of strengthening knowledge and skills for sustainable development. Six well-established Bonn institutions are behind this association: BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion), the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Hoschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), the Institute for Environment and Human Security of the United Nations Univeristy (UNU-EHS) and the University of Bonn with its Center for Development Research (ZEF).

Together, we are establishing the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB) - a platform for society-wide work on a sustainable future. Various actors are invited to come together with their different ideas, expertise and perspectives in order to work together on transdisciplinary questions of sustainability. Sustainable development needs this diversity of perspectives, and the Bonn Alliance wants to capture it with its work.

Our Head Office

The Head Office of the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research led by Sandra Gilgan, Managing Director, supports the Bonn Alliance in the implementation of joint formats and the emergence of the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB). These include short programs such as the Alumni Spring School, lecture series, network events, workshops and many more. How these formats make an important contribution to the ICB can be seen in this film:

The profile of the institutional research landscape in Bonn is characterized by broad expertise in development policy and development research. Particularly noteworthy examples include the United Nations University with its Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) as a global scientific institution, as well as the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion). These institutions engage in interdisciplinary non-university research with different dimensions of sustainability and global change from the perspective of development research or peace and conflict research, and organize their research in high-performance global networks.

Finally, in addition to the discipline-oriented sustainability research with the Center for Development Research (ZEF), the University of Bonn also has an interdisciplinary research institution that conducts international research on development issues and key sustainability topics. The overall picture is completed by the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS), which, with its International Centre for Sustainable Development, is researching innovative and interdisciplinary solutions for sustainable development. In particular, as a university for applied sciences, the H-BRS focuses on the transfer of science into a sustainable economy. The political relevance of the Bonn Institutes becomes clear from the fact that DIE, BICC and ZEF have been listed among the most influential global think tanks for years - more than at any other location in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Our Work

The cooperation in the context of the Bonn Alliance includes both a profound cooperation in joint scientific projects and symposia as well as in the field of capacity building through the extension of current teaching and further education courses on sustainability.
